WHAT IS THE VISION ELEMENT?

The community has identified issues that are keys to their vision of Lee County as a highly desirable place to live, work, and visit through 2035. Most important among them are a growing, diverse economy and a natural environment that will continue to be attractive to visitors long into the future.

WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

Where there is no planning vision, there are traffic jams, lack of diverse jobs and housing, little opportunity for green space and recreation, and troublesome sprawl. The vision statement articulates ideals, goals, and priorities, and sets the foundation for all other components of the plan. The vision is based on comments, concerns and needs shared by the community at 12 New Horizon 2035 visioning workshops.

WHAT ARE THE CHANGES?

The Vision element has been updated to reflect the county’s changing demographics, population, economics, and emerging challenges faced by coastal, urban, suburban and rural neighborhoods.

The element has been updated to:
• Address distinctions between urban, suburban, and rural communities to ensure that each maintains its unique character and identity;
• Promote the development of mixed-use centers in the right locations;
• Foster a better transportation system to connect the county’s communities; and
• Support the grassroots efforts of local communities to draft their own community plans in the appropriate context of state, regional and county visions.
